Who's Who on the District

The District Office  V  District Leadership

La Mar Carlson … District Superintendent

La Mar E. Carlson grew up in Du Bois, Pennsylvania and received both his calls to Christ and to the ordained ministry through First UMC of Du Bois.  He is a 1974 graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Psychology.  He went on to earn a Masters of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1977 with a special emphasis in pastoral counseling.  While at seminary La Mar served as an associate pastor on paid staff for Versailles UMC specializing in young adult ministry as well as serving as primary worship leader.  He also served as an assistant chaplain for the Lexington Federal Correctional Institution.

La Mar's first appointment in the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference was to the Marchand Charge in Indiana District consisting of three churches: Marchand, North Point and Tanoma.  A special emphasis was community ministry and church growth.  From 1985 to 1990 He served as Associate Pastor of the Murrysville UMC.  His primary areas of service were church growth, youth ministry, missions and pastoral care.  La Mar help lead annual mission work trips to West Virginia where entire homes were constructed for families in desperate need of housing.

From 1990 to 1997 La Mar served here on the Washington District as Senior Pastor of the Monongahela UMC.  The congregation experienced significant growth in programming, membership, attendance and finances.  Significant upgrading of the facilities was accomplished.  From 1997 to 2004 he served as Senior Pastor of the Oakmont UMC.  Here again, significant growth occurred in programming, membership, attendance and finances.   A building renovation campaign of over $700,000 was completed without debt.  In 2003, he received the Denman Award for evangelism.

In 2004 La Mar was installed as District Superintendent of the Washington District.  He feels he has come home and believes his varied experience has given him a skill set to be of assistance.  He is available for consultations and for special seminars especially in the areas of church growth and financial stewardship.  Contact the district office to schedule La Mar.

La Mar is married to Rachel.  Their son, Nathan, is enrolled in PTS Seminary and serves as student pastor for the Homewood/Koppel Charge.

Jan Moody – Washington District Secretary

Jan has been the Administrative Secretary for the Washington District for nine years.  She is a member of Grace UMC in Coal Center and has been active in ministry.  She is a member of the Washington District Leadership Team which implements the social engagements and training help shops held on the district.

She is a graduate of Oral Roberts University and California University of Pennsylvania.  Jan is an adjunct faulty member at California University of Pennsylvania in the Communication Studies Department.   She is often found teaching Oral Communication, which she sees as a funny joke from God.  She must teach students how to speak and present in front of an audience, something of which Jan cringes from doing.

Jan is a single mom of 15 year old, Tori, a sophomore in high school.  Tori is devoted to the music program at Charleroi High School playing french horn, mellophone, trumpet and singing alto in the chorus.  She has attend various county and district musical events as a representative of Charleroi. Tori is also involved with committees within the school and church as well as the youth group and loves attending Creation each summer.

Jan moved back to the Pittsburgh Area in 1992 from the Los Angeles area where she lived for three years working in the movie industry.  She lives with her mother helping to maintain the family home since her father suddenly passed away in October 2005.
